Our students are rising stars in their chosen fields - Prof. Fajana

Friday, 2nd. January, 2017 will remain indelible in the annals of Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU), Ikeji Arakeji, the first Entrepreneurial University in Nigeria, as the University held her 7th. Convocation Ceremony in her tenth year of inception, for the award of First, Higher and conferment of honorary Doctorate Degrees on some prominent Nigerians.

The ceremony which was the grand finale of a week-long programme of activities held at the Oba Oladele Olashore Auditorium of the University witnessed a large turn-out of dignitaries from all works of life.

In his address, the Chancellor of the University, Pastor (Dr.) Wemimo Odunaiya who was highly excited to witness the tremendous growth and development of the university at various stages, appreciated the faithfulness of God. While congratulating the graduands on the success achieved, he admonished them not to rest on their oars, but continue to study more.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, Professor A.M.A. Imevbore, humbly appreciated God for the divine transformation of the University, whom, he described as, a mustard seed of faith sown by the founding fathers ten years ago. He expressed his gratitude to individuals and organizations who have contributed to the actualization of the University’s dream since inception. He however congratulated the graduands and urged them to hold firmly to the motto and spirit of the university in all their dealings while striving to be worthy ambassadors of the University.

In the same vein, the President C.A.C. Worldwide and Chairman Board of Trustee, Pastor Abraham Akinosun, gave a brief insight into the history of the University since inception. He congratulated the graduands and admonished them to make godliness and fear of God their watchwords in their future undertakings. He opined that, the University is fortunate to have attracted a number of rising stars as students from various departments.

Earlier in his convocation address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sola Fajana recognized the passionate, active and effective leadership provided by the University’s Board of Trustees towards the growth and development of the University. He however enumerated the milestones accomplished recently by the University to include the following:

On the plans for the future, he reiterated the University’s readiness for full Open and Distance Learning programme, when approved by NUC. In addition, the Vice-Chancellor notified of the University’s resolve to erect a world class monumental Museum in honour of the great Apostle Joseph Ayo Babalola.

Highlights of the occasion were the conferment of First Degrees, Post-graduate Diplomas and Masters’ Degrees of various programmes of the University and Honorary Doctoral Degrees conferred on three eminent Nigerians who have carved a niche for themselves in the society:

University Direction’ Proprietor’s Responsibilities, DON Speaks.

The former Vice Chancellor University of Agriculture Abeokuta and the immediate past Executive Secretary of National University Commission, NUC, Professor Julius Okojie, has called on Government to relentlessly evolve pragmatic methods on behalf of tertiary intervention agency in order to accommodate private universities to benefiting from tertiary education trust fund share for the purpose of healthy competition, standard and sustenance.

The charge was given during the 7th Convocation lecture at Joseph Ayo Babalola University Ikeji Arakeji Osun State. The lecture titled ‘Fate of Faith-based Universities: whiter the faithful’, was calmly delivered by a colleague of academic repute professor A.M Balogun. In his scholastic approach, professor Balogun averred that faith-based universities could have performed better provided they have even access (like public universities) to tertiary education trust fund. The case of some Universities spending about #30 million monthly as support fund to cater for salaries and other expenses by the mission authority is comparatively discouraging. Even if it is a non- profit institution, it should have, from the institution regular remittance into its reserve to meeting unforeseen contingencies and other needs.

The intervention agency (TETFUND) which has its contribution majorly from private companies (private universities) should have workable percentage from such fund extended to this sector whose aim is the general improvement of education. ‘It is pitiable that these institutions that had resolved to partner with constituted authority in building human capacity development and productive labour force have been ignored in the disbursement of financial grants’ he remarked. ‘The role played by these institutions cannot be overemphasized, considering the alarming state of moral decadence, and dwindling value for moderation and diligence in our country’ he submitted. He however encouraged that the ongoing debate be sustained and that public-private collaboration be thoroughly worked out to creating a level playing ground for private universities.

He maintained that, the choice of direction of faith-based institution should be the proprietor’s responsibilities in order to engender the penetration of best practices and innovative ideas that ensures sustenance and standard. He warned various institutions’ board of trustees against needless interference and recruitment of mediocre in the management of university system.

Administration strategist as fondly called went further to passionately charged school proprietors about the importance of rendering community service to the people, which could help cushion the effect of the current economic hardship. ‘University can marketize for social peace and economic wealth apart from teaching and research’ he said.

He called on Founders (BOT) of faith based institutions to optimize ways for fund generation and eschew itself from every acts that constitute undue interference in the university management to allow for smooth and efficient management system. According to him, faith-based universities proprietors’ should also optimize the innovative fund generation strategies available to her as it is the only enduring panacea for shaping the future course of a university. He mentioned Harvard, Yale and University of Ibadan etc. as institutions that have made milestones strides and success through associations and determination.

To this end, the guest lecturer having traced the inception of University education from different epoch till the emergence of Nigeria’s first university in 1948; university of Ibadan, an off shoot of the London university college submitted that universities across board are all offshoot of one religious institution or the other.

While reacting, professor Imevbore thanked the guest lecturer professor Julius Okojie who was unavoidably absent for his support and word of wisdom so far relished by the school. Professor Z.J Adeyewa vice chancellor of the Redeemers University, while adding his voice admitted there are lots to be done, but JABU is adding value yearly. He submitted by praising Proprietors of Faith-based universities for the virtue of transparency and probity which is now coveted by public institutions.

Saturday, 28th. January, 2017 will remain indelible in the hearts of the people of Esa Oke and Ibokun in Oriade and Obokun Local Government Areas of Osun State respectively, as they turned out in their large numbers to witness the presentation of trade kits and tools to youth, who had undergone various entrepreneurial skills and trades at the Entrepreneurship and Skills Acquisition Centre of the  Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU), Ikeji Arakeji solely sponsored by Honourable Busayo Oluwole Oke, a philanthropist of note and a Lawmaker, representing, Oriade/Obokun Federal Constituency at the Federal House of Representative, Abuja.

The beneficiaries who were drawn from across the local government areas without political affiliation and gender considerations and have been when trained in skills such as; print making, tailoring, screen printing, bead making, hairdressing, tie and dye, commercial farming, barbing, paint making, etc.

Speaking at his Palace, Oba Akanbi Adeniran Adeyemi, the Owamiran of Esa Oke, eulogized the good deeds of Hon. Oluwole Oke. He described him as a rare breed of politician, who is passionate about assisting people in need. He advised politicians to borrow a leaf from his laudable gestures.

In his speech, Hon. Oluwole Oke, who was overwhelmed by the show of love and gratitude to him by the beneficiaries and dignitaries at the occasion and acknowledged the goodwill received from Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Entrepreneurship and Skills Acquisition Centre, promising his unflinching support for serious minded and indigent youth of the federal constituency when called upon. As a mark of his love for sports development, Hon. Oke promised to build a brand new stadium and complete the abandoned Town Hall project at Esa Oke before the end of the year.

Similarly, at Ibokun, the headquarters of Obokun Local Government Area, it was another wonderful moment, as people came out in their large numbers showering encomiums on the Lawmaker. He advised the beneficiaries to make the best use of the tools and be diligent in their undertakings. In addition, he promised his patronage of their products when available.
