Our students are rising stars in their chosen fields - Prof. Fajana

Friday, 2nd. January, 2017 will remain indelible in the annals of Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU), Ikeji Arakeji, the first Entrepreneurial University in Nigeria, as the University held her 7th. Convocation Ceremony in her tenth year of inception, for the award of First, Higher and conferment of honorary Doctorate Degrees on some prominent Nigerians.

The ceremony which was the grand finale of a week-long programme of activities held at the Oba Oladele Olashore Auditorium of the University witnessed a large turn-out of dignitaries from all works of life.

In his address, the Chancellor of the University, Pastor (Dr.) Wemimo Odunaiya who was highly excited to witness the tremendous growth and development of the university at various stages, appreciated the faithfulness of God. While congratulating the graduands on the success achieved, he admonished them not to rest on their oars, but continue to study more.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, Professor A.M.A. Imevbore, humbly appreciated God for the divine transformation of the University, whom, he described as, a mustard seed of faith sown by the founding fathers ten years ago. He expressed his gratitude to individuals and organizations who have contributed to the actualization of the University’s dream since inception. He however congratulated the graduands and urged them to hold firmly to the motto and spirit of the university in all their dealings while striving to be worthy ambassadors of the University.

In the same vein, the President C.A.C. Worldwide and Chairman Board of Trustee, Pastor Abraham Akinosun, gave a brief insight into the history of the University since inception. He congratulated the graduands and admonished them to make godliness and fear of God their watchwords in their future undertakings. He opined that, the University is fortunate to have attracted a number of rising stars as students from various departments.

Earlier in his convocation address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sola Fajana recognized the passionate, active and effective leadership provided by the University’s Board of Trustees towards the growth and development of the University. He however enumerated the milestones accomplished recently by the University to include the following:

-         Partnership with the Federal Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to train youth from the region on entrepreneurial hands-on skills acquisition

-       Commencement of some additional master’s and doctoral programmes in the fields of Computer Science, Entrepreneurship, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Mass Communication, Religious Studies, Economics, Accounting, Food Science and Technology and Business Administration

-          Commencement of College of Health Science programmes upon NUC approval and upgrade of the Medical Centre to accommodate maternal and child health services.

 

-          Recruitment, development and retention of the best faculty with competitive and attractive conditions of service; coupled with staff promotion and confirmation.

 

On the plans for the future, he reiterated the University’s readiness for full Open and Distance Learning programme, when approved by NUC. In addition, the Vice-Chancellor notified of the University’s resolve to erect a world class monumental Museum in honour of the great Apostle Joseph Ayo Babalola.

 

Highlights of the occasion were the conferment of First Degrees, Post-graduate Diplomas and Masters’ Degrees of various programmes of the University and Honorary Doctoral Degrees conferred on three eminent Nigerians who have carved a niche for themselves in the society:

 

-    His Imperial Majesty, Oba Enitan Babatunde Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, Ooni of Ile Ife, who bagged an honorary degree of Doctor of Public Administration.

-        Pastor Caxton Segun Fasuyi, frontline businessman, passionate philanthropist and benefactor of the University bagged an honorary degree of Doctor of Entrepreneurship .

-       Mr. Babatope Agbeyo, Chairman Cornfield Group of Companies, a seasoned entrepreneur of note, bagged an honorary Doctor of Entrepreneurship.

 

In his acceptance speech, Oba Ogunwusi expressed his sincere appreciation to the management for the honour done on him and urged the students to embrace entrepreneurship as a viable alternative to joblessness and poverty. He however promised his unalloyed support for the University.

To add glamour and thrills to the occasion was the presence of the Ooni’s entourage comprising of members of Ile Ife traditional institution and the crème de la crème of the Yoruba ‘Nollywood’ artistes, who were on ground to support one of the honorary awardees at the occasion. Representatives of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities and the Nigerian Universities Commission were also present.

In all, a total number of six hundred and seventy-five (675) students graduated with honours in various degree programmes across the seven colleges of the University.
