Department of Political Science

History

The Department of Political Science started in 2006 when the founding fathers of Joseph Ayo Babalola University through divine guidance floated some Departments. The department started with three pioneer academic staff and expanded with programmes in International Relations and Public Administration.

The department graduated its first set in 2010 with 6 students out of 8 pioneer students. The department was able to record first-class students among the pioneer students. Prof O.S. Olaiya was the pioneer Head of the Department.

The underlying specific philosophy of a BSc in Political Science is to produce a flow of competent and confident graduate students whose minds are well developed who are intellectually sound in the various fields of Political Science, and who can make meaningful contributions to the political and Social development of Nigeria, Africa and indeed the entire world.

The general philosophy is the belief that training in the discipline of political science will develop the mind and impact both theoretical and practical knowledge on the individual students and develop self-confidence, help to be innovative and self-reliant in the field of administration, management and be competent to handle complex relations in the ever-changing bureaucracy and growing business environment.

The department presently has a student population of about 180. There are twelve academic staff made up of one Professor, three senior lecturers, seven other lecturers and one graduate assistant.

Philosophy

Political Science is primarily concerned with the scientific study of the state and its institutions. It also covers non-state actors and their relationships with formal institutions of the state. The philosophy and mission of the BSc (Political Science) programme is to produce graduates with a critical mind, fully equipped with requisite theoretical, methodological and analytical ability and skills to analyse, comprehend, predict and appreciate the factors that shape and mould power relationships in an ever-changing socio-political environment in a globalising world.
