Network and Infrastructure Unit
Introduction
The Network and Infrastructure Unit is the backbone of Joseph Ayo Babalola University’s (JABU) digital ecosystem. Charged with the design, deployment, maintenance, and security of all on‑premise and cloud‑based IT infrastructure, this unit ensures that every lecture hall, research laboratory, administrative office, and student residence enjoys reliable, high‑speed connectivity. By leveraging industry‑leading technologies—such as fibre-optic campus backbone, enterprise‑grade switches and routers, and redundant power and cooling systems—the unit delivers a robust network capable of handling bandwidth‑intensive applications, video streaming, and large‑scale data transfers without interruption.
With a proactive, 24/7 network monitoring framework, the team continually assesses performance metrics and threat landscapes, automatically triggering alerts for anomalies. This approach minimises downtime, supports real‑time troubleshooting, and provides the scalability required for future expansion, adding new academic blocks, and rolling out smart‑classroom technologies.
Mission
To build, secure, and sustain a scalable, high-performance ICT infrastructure that empowers JABU’s community to teach, learn, research, and innovate without technological barriers, thereby advancing the university’s pursuit of academic excellence and digital leadership.
Key Services & Capabilities
-
Campus LAN/WAN Design & Deployment: Crafting a hierarchical network topology that optimises traffic flows between academic departments, administrative units, the central data centre, and off‑site research facilities.
-
Wireless Network Services: Managing a secure, high‑density Wi‑Fi infrastructure across the main campus, hostels, sports complex, and outdoor spaces to facilitate seamless roaming and uninterrupted access.
-
Cybersecurity & Risk Management: Deploying next‑generation firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), and network segmentation to safeguard sensitive student records, financial data, and research information from external threats.
-
Data Centre & Server Operations: Overseeing virtualisation platforms (VMware, Hyper‑V) and private cloud clusters to deliver scalable compute and storage, and with cold/hot site redundancy to guarantee business continuity and rapid disaster recovery.
-
Cloud Integration & Virtualisation: Partnering with leading cloud service providers (e.g., Google) to extend JABU’s on‑premise infrastructure, enabling burst compute capacity for big‑data analytics, e‑learning spikes, and secure off‑site backups.
-
Performance Optimisation & Capacity Planning: Regularly conducting network performance audits, bandwidth utilisation analyses, and stress‑testing to forecast growth, allocate resources efficiently, and plan upgrades before bottlenecks occur.
Objectives
-
Network Architecture & Management: Design, implement, and document a resilient network roadmap that delivers 99.9% uptime and supports future expansions seamlessly.
-
Advanced Security Posture: Continuously enhance perimeter defences, endpoint protection, and incident response capabilities to mitigate evolving cyber threats and ensure regulatory compliance.
-
Data Centre Excellence: Maintain best‑practice standards (Uptime Institute Tier II or higher) for server rooms and data centres, ensuring redundant power, cooling, and connectivity for critical services.
-
Wireless & Wired Accessibility: Expand and optimise campus‑wide wired and wireless access points, guaranteeing high throughput and quality of service (QoS) for academic, research, and administrative use cases.
-
Cloud & Virtualisation Strategy: Integrate hybrid‑cloud solutions and virtualisation technologies to reduce capital expenditure, improve resource utilisation, and enable flexible service delivery.
-
Collaborative Synergy: Work closely with the MIS Unit, Media Unit, and ICT Training Centre to ensure that infrastructure enhancements directly support the evolution of the university website, e‑portal, multimedia initiatives, and training programs.
-
Audit & Monitoring: Institute a rigorous schedule of quarterly IT audits, continuous network monitoring, and performance reporting to drive data‑driven optimisations and uphold service-level agreements.
