Department of Biological Sciences
History
Through divine guidance and uncommon wisdom, the founding fathers of JABU established the Department of Biological Sciences on 25 October 2006. This first-of-its-kind degree aims to attend to the peculiar needs of the teaming Nigerian undergraduates.
The Microbiology programme is run in the Department of Biological Sciences. It was started on 25 October 2006, with five academic staff and an initial student population 15. The pioneer Head of the Department was Dr A.R. Fatubarin (Late) who was in charge till 2009. The department was under the headship of Prof. I. Akpan for a brief period in 2009. Dr K.I.T. Eniola became the acting Head of the Department from 2009 to 2011. He was succeeded by Dr L.E. Okoror from 2011 through 2012. Dr. A.O. Egbebi headed the department from 2012 to 2013. Dr. A.R. Fatubarin took over the department’s leadership from 2013 to 2016.
Dr (Mrs) O.E. Dada took over the headship from 2016 to 2018. The department was coordinated by Mrs O.O. Ajayi after the departure of Dr Dada in 2018. Dr Olufunmilola O. Ajayi became the acting Head of the Department in 2020 till present (2024). The department currently has a total of nine academic staff, one technologist, a departmental secretary and one laboratory assistant. To complement the teaching staff on the ground, the department from time to time engages adjunct, part-time and visiting lecturers.
The department has functioning committees: the Examination Committee, the Seminar Committee, the Staff Advisers for the Students’ Society, the Student Advisory and Welfare Committee, the Laboratory Committee, the Disciplinary Committee, and the Library Committee.
Philosophy
The programme is to provide a sound understanding of the concepts of micro-organisms about mankind and the environment. The programme will elaborate on the importance of micro-organisms in the industry, health and environmental sectors of society. The Microbiology programme will also emphasise traditional biotechnology and the linkages to the current modern biotechnology. Also, the students are expected to be able to
- Achieve a good BSc degree in microbiology.
- Make a successful career in microbiology to fill into different areas of human endeavour.
- Acquire the necessary competence that would enable them to impact knowledge on society.
Likewise, the programme aims to produce cultured Nigerians with trained minds in general while seeking to expose them to all facets of biology with the purpose of self-realisation and a sense of the need to contribute to national development. Problem appreciation in the programme is located in the concrete objective of the Nigerian situation and cultural milieu.
Vision
The main objectives of the programme are to broadly educate students for positions in the industry, health sectors, and research institutes and to prepare them for graduate and professional studies in the life of applied areas of microbiology.
Furthermore, the students are trained for:
- Developing confidence in appreciating and solving problems in general.
- Development of self-confidence in handling problems with minimal or no supervision.
- Building of students’ capacity to fit into the appropriate level of manpower to which their qualification would allow them in various employment opportunities available to microbiologists.
- Microbiologists who can be self-employed and possibly employers of labour introduction to how they can use micro-organisms, microbial products, principles and techniques to solve problems and make revenue (Entrepreneurial Microbiology).
- Entrance into postgraduate training without difficulty.
- Acquisition of the capability to teach basic Biology and Chemistry courses up to the senior secondary level.
