Vice-Chancellor

Overview

The Vice-Chancellor (VC) is the university’s chief executive officer responsible for academic leadership, strategic delivery and the day-to-day management of Joseph Ayo Babalola University. The VC implements decisions approved by the University’s governing body and provides visible leadership across teaching, research, community engagement and institutional development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership for teaching, research, innovation, administration and service delivery.
  • Drive strategic planning, resource allocation, and institutional performance in alignment with the university’s strategic plan.
  • Ensure academic standards and regulatory compliance across programmes, examinations and awards.
  • Promote a healthy campus culture: staff development, student welfare, inclusion and corporate governance.
  • Oversee financial stewardship, asset management and risk mitigation in collaboration with senior officers.
  • Lead institutional fundraising, external relations, partnerships and global engagement.
  • Chair or attend senior committees as required and report regularly to statutory bodies.

    Appointment, Term and Succession

    • Appointment: The Vice-Chancellor is appointed by the Council on the recommendation of the Appointments Committee and in accordance with the University’s Statutes.

    • Term: The VC serves for a fixed term (as defined in University regulations) and may be eligible for renewal subject to Council approval.
    • Succession: An Acting Vice-Chancellor is appointed by Council/Pro-Chancellor in the event of temporary absence; formal succession is handled by Council processes.

    Role and Purpose

    • Lead the university’s academic, administrative and strategic operations.
    • Translate the vision and policy set by the Council, Pro-Chancellor and Senate into operational plans and measurable outcomes.

    • Safeguard academic quality, integrity and the student experience while growing the university’s research, partnerships and reputation.

    • Represent JABU to external stakeholders, which includes government, funders, partners and the public, and act as the principal ambassador for the institution.

    Powers and Delegated Authority

    • Operational authority to implement academic and administrative policies within limits set by University Statutes and financial delegations.

    • Recommend appointment, promotion and discipline actions within delegated remit and in line with human resource policies.

    • Approve budgets, programmes and partnerships subject to Council/Bursar/Statutory approvals as required.

    • Convene and chair executive meetings to expedite decisions across academic and corporate services.

    Governance Relationships

    • Accountable to: Pro-Chancellor and Council (corporate governance and strategy).

    • Academic accountability: works closely with the Senate on academic policy, standards and award approvals.

    • Collaborative relationship with: Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Registrar and Bursar for operational delivery.

    • External representation: engages with regulatory bodies, accreditation agencies, funders and partner institutions.
