Department of Architecture
History
The Department of Architecture was formally established during the 2008/2009 academic session as one of the university’s four foundation departments of the College of Environmental Sciences. The department adopted the national two-tier professional training of architects. It set out to produce graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture as the first tier, followed up with a postgraduate Master of Science degree for the second tier, to take the graduates to the professional level. The first Bachelor of Sciences degree graduates were thus turned out in the 2012/2013 session.
Vision
The programme is designed as a two-tier degree structure. The first degree leads to the award of a Bachelor’s degree in architecture, while the second tier leads to the Master’s degree in Architecture. The Master’s degree is recognised as a minimum professional qualification. Architecture is an interdisciplinary field which synthesises knowledge from several fields including the humanities, the social and the physical sciences. Architecture graduates are trained in the art and science of planning, design, construction, maintenance, management and the coordination of allied professionals in the built environment. Architecture seeks to accommodate all human activities under varied conditions with a full understanding of the different physical contexts. The programme is designed to account for the changing needs of architectural education arising from the changing social, economic, psychological and technological environment.
Philosophy
The philosophy of the Architecture programme is to provide a broad spectrum of skills and knowledge necessary for designing and constructing spaces for human activities. These include technological, scientific, artistic, and environmental sensitivity. The programme also leverages the country’s rich cultural and traditional heritage.
