Department of Crop Science
History
The Department of Crop Science was established in 2006 as one of the founding departments of the university. From its inception, the department has aimed to produce well-rounded, articulate graduates who will become job creators and employers of labour. The department’s specific objectives are:
- To develop programmes that cover the broad areas of crop science.
- To produce production-oriented graduates in agriculture using a hands-on approach to training.
- To train personnel capable of teaching, conducting relevant research, and taking up employment in various aspects of crop science across Nigeria.
- To equip graduates with the skills necessary to establish and operate their farming enterprises.
In addition to producing independent business owners, the department also aims to cultivate outstanding employees for both the private and public sectors. Graduates from the department are expected to be worthy ambassadors of this pioneering entrepreneurial university in Nigeria. The department is staffed with seasoned professionals dedicated to raising job creators in the field of crop science.
Philosophy
The principal focus of Nigeria’s national agricultural policy is to strengthen the agricultural sector, particularly the crop production sub-sector, to meet the growing demand for food and industrial raw materials. The philosophy and mission of the department’s Crop Science programme align with these national goals, aiming to make a positive and significant contribution to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The programme is designed to support Nigeria’s renewed commitment to food sufficiency and self-reliance by producing graduates equipped with comprehensive theoretical knowledge and practical skills in crop production. These skills are essential for meaningful engagement in the field and for contributing to national economic growth.
Vision
The vision of the department is to become the foremost Crop Science programme in the region and a global reference point. The department strives to produce well-rounded graduates who are not only job seekers but also job creators and employers of labour, contributing to economic development and agricultural advancement.
