Department of Economics

History

The founding fathers of JABU through divine guidance and uncommon wisdom established the Department of Economics at inception in 2006. The programme aims to attend to the peculiar needs of the teaming Nigerian undergraduates. The underlying philosophy of the BSc Economics programme in JABU is to develop creative minds among students as well as prepare them for leadership responsibilities in industries, government and NGOs.

The department was established on 26 October 2006, and Dr. S.A. Olaiya, now a Professor, was the pioneer Acting Head of Department as a senior lecturer. Besides the Acting Head of Department, there were three other academic members of staff. The department took off with 27 students. There has been substantial growth in the department with a current student population of eighty-six.

Dr. B.B. Omoniyi was the Acting Head of Department as a Senior Lecturer and as Associate Professor from 2017 to 2023. He operated with eleven other lecturers, a principal system analyst and a secretarial staff. There is currently one adequately equipped laboratory, hardware and software for student work. The Economics programme of the department was granted full accreditation in 2012. In May 2017, the department graduated 258 students. The department has added 66 graduates in 2018. Thus, the total number of graduates from the department sums to 324 graduates. The department was reaccredited in 2019 and got full accreditation. Dr. K.E. Ofoezie, as a Lecturer I became the Coordinator of the department from October 2023. He was promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer in 2024 and received a renewal of his appointment for 2024. He is therefore the current Acting Head of the Department to date. The department has also graduated 72 additional students to October 2024. The total number of students graduated from 2006 to 2024 is 330 students.

Philosophy

The philosophy and mission statement underlying the economics programmes of Nigerian Universities is to produce graduates equipped with critical skills and abilities to abstract – using simplified models that identify the essence of a programme, analyse and reason – both deductively and inductively, marshal evidence, assimilate structure and analyse qualitative and quantitative data, communicate concisely the results to a wide audience including those with no training in Economics, think critically about the limits of one’s analysis in a broader socio-economic context, and economic policy inferences and to recognise the potential constraint and their implementation.

Vision

To be a department of economics of international repute that ranks amongst the best in the world.

Mission

The Department of Economics hopes to produce students of international repute who will be able to compete with their colleagues and rank amongst the best in the world.

Econometric Lab

We have the econometric lab equipped with 20 desktop computers. They are loaded with up-to-date packages for analysis. These include E-view, PCS, etc., available for both students and staff development in learning data analysis.
