Deputy Vice-Chancellor

Core Responsibilities

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor assists the Vice-Chancellor in leading academic and administrative functions. Responsibilities include:

Academic Leadership

  • Oversee academic activities and ensure compliance with Senate-approved guidelines.

  • Supervise academic planning, performance reviews, and quality audits.

  • Enhance the student learning experience and promote academic innovation.

  • Facilitate curriculum review and strengthen continuous academic improvement.

Research and Postgraduate Development

  • Promote research culture, productivity, and grant acquisition.

  • Support postgraduate programme coordination in line with Senate policy.

  • Strengthen collaborations, research ethics, and scholarly visibility.

Staff Development and Academic Administration

  • Assist in academic staff recruitment, mentoring, and promotion processes.

  • Provide leadership for capacity-building and professional development initiatives.

  • Strengthen academic integrity, discipline, and workload management.

Senate Coordination

  • Participate actively in Senate meetings, committees, and subcommittees.

  • Interpret and execute Senate resolutions across colleges and directorates.

  • Collaborate with the Registrar (Senate Secretary) for smooth Senate administration.

Acting Vice-Chancellor Duties

When delegated, the DVC may act on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor in the VC’s absence, ensuring continuity in academic and administrative leadership.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) serves as a key academic leader and senior member of the Senate, supporting the Vice-Chancellor in implementing academic policy, driving quality improvement, and coordinating academic activities. As part of the Senate’s composition, the DVC plays an integral role in upholding academic excellence, governance, and institutional integrity.

Role Within the Senate

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor is a statutory member of the Senate, the university’s highest academic authority. Within this body, the DVC contributes to:

  • Academic policy formulation and review.

  • Oversight of teaching, learning, and examinations.

  • Programme development and accreditation processes.

  • Research development and postgraduate coordination.

  • Quality assurance across all academic units.

  • Enforcement of academic regulations.

  • Consideration and approval of academic results and awards.

Relationships with Key Academic Offices

Within the Senate structure, the DVC works closely with:

  • Vice-Chancellor — principal academic leader and Chair of Senate (in most statutes).

  • Registrar — Secretary to the Senate.

  • University Librarian — custodian of academic resources and member of Senate.

  • Academic Directors — leaders of academic units.

  • Deans of Colleges — heads of faculties and member representatives.

  • Dean of Student Affairs — voice of student welfare and discipline within the Senate.
